HL7 delivers healthcare interoperability standards

NPfIT progress so far

A clear commitment to international standards is a major theme of the first article by Gordon Hextall for eHealth Insider summarizing the progress of NPfIT so far. There is also a clear commitment expressed again to integrating with existing systems.

Maybe future articles in the series will describe how much of that local integration is dependent upon HL7v2 standards. Further, we may hear about the important role that CFH has had in establishing HL7v3 clinical statements as the basis for sharing data between English healthcare systems using GP2GP or CDA, and how this strategy is delivering a framework that serves national needs, while being central to emerging global standards, with all the cost and safety benefits that flow from that.

"I am keen to address the myths and to provide facts about the work that goes on behind the scenes, the progress that has been and continues to be made whilst acknowledging and explaining the problem areas. This is the first of a series of columns that sets out to explain the challenges in delivering what is regularly billed as the largest civilian IT programme in the world." (Gordon Hextall, NHS CfH chief operating officer and interim director of programme and systems delivery)
