In January the Department of Health laid out their plans for the NHS ITK "Interoperability Toolkit" at a well attended meeting at the National Motorcycle Museum. As highlighted on the day, and on the NHS Connecting For Health website, the ITK follows the strategy to 'connect all' rather than 'replace all', that is endorsed in the government White Paper, 'Equity & Excellence: Liberating the NHS'.
The toolkit is based on HL7 standards, version 2 and version 3, both of which are already deployed widely in the NHS.
HL7 UK fully endorses and supports this initiative and was pleased to hear at the session that the NHS will build on well established national and international standards.
Presentation materials from the day are here.
