HL7 delivers healthcare interoperability standards

HL7 latest news on change of IP policy

Posted 12 March 2013

Making HL7 standards available free of charge is something that HL7 UK has been pushing for internationally for a while, and is especially good news following the recent UK Cabinet Office Open Standards Consultation.

This landmark decision represents HL7ís commitment to the betterment of healthcare worldwide by ensuring that all stakeholders have equal access to its HIT standards. The new policy is effective April 1, 2013 and includes all currently published standards, implementation guides and other select IP as determined on a case-by-case basis.

The HL7 UK Management Board expect that this decision will be greatly beneficial to the further adoption of HL7 in the UK and look forward to working with HL7 UK Members to make this happen.

"By making our standards freely available, we hope to accelerate the evolution of healthcare information exchange at the very basic levels, and ultimately to impact wellness and healthcare delivery on a global scale. This decision has met with overwhelming support from members and other stakeholders," said Charles Jaffe, MD, PhD, CEO of HL7.
